During the final days of Mississippi’s 2017 regular state legislative session, ICSC members gathered in Jackson for the first annual Mississippi Government Relations Breakfast at the State Capitol. The legislative briefing and breakfast featured House Speaker Philip Gunn.
Speaker Gunn discussed industry-related highlights from the session, including online sales tax and infrastructure improvement efforts. The Speaker recently pushed for legislation that seeks to resolve the infrastructure funding issue through funds collected by closing the online sales tax loophole. ICSC volunteers in Mississippi have actively advocated for these issues. Shopping centers employ nearly 10% of Mississippi’s population and local sales tax collection is the primary funding source for municipal governments.
The event was sponsored by ICSC Global Public Policy and hosted by Southern Division GR Chair Ron Farris and Mississippi GR Chair Grant Meyer. It included joint participation from Mississippi P3 Chair Joy Foy, who was intrumental in organizing the event.
